The Alaska Synod’s Rooted in Christ: Connected in Community cohort launched in early 2017 with three congregations and one additional doing a coaching-only component. An initiative for discipleship and mission, the Rooted cohort met four times in 12 months, focusing on assessment through tools including the Congregational Vitality Survey. The next steps are discerning and implementing “mission experiments,” informed by assessments and deep listening. One more congregation joined the cohort, which will continue to meet throughout 2018. The cohort met in February 2018, which included an open-to-all discipleship workshop by visiting presenter Rev. Dr. John Herman, attended by more than 20 people.
Coaches for Rooted are Rev. John Van Haneghan (Fairbanks Lutheran) and Zach Manzella (St. Mark- Anchorage). Rooted leaders include Zach Manzella, Rev. Carol George (St. Mark-Anchorage), Marilyn Rosene (Dillingham Trinity Lutheran) and Rev. Sandra Rudd (Sitka Lutheran). Rooted leaders gather each time with the Road to Emmaus story (Luke 24, as above) to ground their work.
The purpose of Rooted is always to know and embrace God’s love more deeply and share that life-changing good news with more people in new ways.
